Graduate Essay

To My Future Self

Future me, how are you? What are you doing now? Have you gotten married? If so, who did you marry? A Japanese or an Indonesian? Right now, my mind is full of questions I want to ask you. If I met you, we would probably talk all day and still have more to say. By the way, I’m doing very well right now.
Currently, I am in Japan, living here. But it’s much harder than I thought. I’m delivering newspapers while studying Japanese. Every day I wake up at 1 AM to deliver newspapers. I finish at 5 AM, then go home and can sleep for about 2 hours, but I have to wake up at 8 AM because I have school at 9 AM. I repeat this from Monday to Friday every week. How about that? It’s tough, but since this is my decision, I’m going to try my hardest no matter how difficult it is. You might be laughing as you read this letter.
By the way, are mom and dad in Bali doing well? In Japan, I always pray for my parents’ health. As long as they are alive, I want you to take good care of them, especially mom. Mom might not talk about her illness because she doesn’t want to worry me and my sister. I hope that doesn’t happen. I love mom and don’t want anything bad to happen to her. You must think the same. It might be hard, but you are the only man among the siblings, so please do your best.
Also, make sure to socialize with the neighbors and build good relationships with them. You know how important neighborhood relationships are in Bali, right? Having good relationships with others will surely benefit you in the future. When you need help, they will surely assist you. Relying on your sisters all the time is shameful. So, have a strong spirit and never give up easily.
Lastly, I have a few things to remind you of. Please don’t play games too frequently. It’s fine to play occasionally, but be mindful of the time. Don’t stay up late so you can get enough sleep. Health is very important, so please exercise occasionally. If you’re married and have a family, always be happy. And of course, take care of your parents.
I hope the you reading this letter will be happier than the 23-year-old me. Good luck.
From your 23-year-old self
