The Wonderful Person I Met in Japan
I have been living in Japan for about a year and a half and have made various friends. Among them, Mr. Ikeda is my favorite person.
I work part-time at a nursing home, where I met Mr. Ikeda. Mr. Ikeda turned 94 this year but is still very energetic and can do almost everything by himself, such as walking, eating, and talking. Being a foreigner, when I first entered the nursing home, I didn’t understand Japanese well. I was very sad because I couldn’t express my opinion or understand what others were saying. However, Mr. Ikeda always encouraged me with a kind voice, saying “Do your best.” He also tried to say “Thank you” in English as much as possible. Mr. Ikeda’s words were a great support to me. My name is difficult for Japanese people to pronounce, but Mr. Ikeda calls me “Ou-chan.” His great-grandson’s name is Ousei, and he thinks of me like his great-grandson, so he gave me the name “Ou,” which moved me to tears. Mr. Ikeda loves flowers. On occasions like Respect for the Aged Day and birthdays, I made origami flowers for him. Seeing Mr. Ikeda reminds me of my own grandmother and makes me feel nostalgic. For me, Mr. Ikeda has become like my own grandmother, and I love him dearly.
From now on, please stay cheerful, relaxed, and live a long and healthy life, Grandma!
